Wisdom in Our Public Responsibilities
Scripture: Matthew 22:19–21
Jesus does not let the trap dictate His answer. He acknowledges that Caesar has a legitimate claim represented by the coin, and He teaches His followers to recognize their responsibilities in earthly life. Government and other earthly authorities are not ultimate, but they can serve our common good. Paying what we owe in taxes, respecting lawful authority, praying for leaders, and serving our neighbors are all ways of living faithfully.
Our civic responsibilities do not compete with faith when they are kept in their proper place. We can participate in our communities thoughtfully and responsibly while remembering that earthly powers are not our savior. Our deepest hope rests in God.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, guide me to fulfill my responsibilities faithfully. Give wisdom to those who govern, and help me serve my neighbors with patience, integrity, and compassion. Amen.
Application question: What is one practical way I can serve my community or fulfill a responsibility faithfully this week?
