When Questions Become Traps

Scripture: Matthew 22:15–18

The religious leaders approach Jesus with a question designed not to help them understand, but to trap Him. We may recognize this pattern in public arguments, but it can also appear in our own hearts. Sometimes we ask what God requires because we genuinely want to learn; at other times, we are looking for the limit that lets us keep doing what we already want to do.

Jesus sees beyond the words to the motives beneath them. His honesty invites us to bring our questions to God with humility rather than using them to defend ourselves. We can ask difficult questions faithfully, trusting that God can handle them—and asking Him to shape our hearts as He answers.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive me when I use questions to justify myself instead of seeking Your truth. Give me an honest heart that is willing to listen and be changed by Your Word. Amen.

Application question: Is there an area of life where I am looking for the minimum God requires instead of seeking His will?
