When Stewardship Becomes Ownership
Scripture: Luke 12:15
Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.
The tenants in Jesus’ parable began treating the vineyard as though it belonged to them. Their problem was not simply that they failed to complete a task; they rejected the owner’s authority. They wanted the benefits of the vineyard without recognizing the one to whom the vineyard belonged.
We can fall into the same pattern. We may become territorial about our time, our possessions, our plans, or even our role in the church. Sometimes we discover how strongly we feel about ownership only when something is taken out of our hands. The Holy Spirit calls us to recognize these tendencies and return to the truth: we are stewards, not owners.
Prayer:
Gracious God, forgive me for the ways I cling to Your gifts as though they belonged to me. Free me from fear, selfishness, and the desire to control. Help me gladly submit my plans, possessions, time, and responsibilities to You. Amen.
Application Question:
Where are you most tempted to become territorial or controlling because you feel that something belongs to you?
