Forgiven People Forgive

Scripture: Ephesians 4:31–32

Reflection
The servant in Jesus’ parable received astonishing mercy, yet he immediately demanded payment from someone who owed him much less. His problem was not that the second debt was insignificant. It was real, and it cost him something to forgive it. His problem was that he had forgotten the mercy he himself had received.

We can make the same mistake. The sins others commit against us can be genuinely painful. Forgiveness does not pretend otherwise. But Christians forgive because Jesus has forgiven us. We do not wait until the other person deserves forgiveness, promises never to fail again, or makes everything right. We release the debt because Christ has released ours. Sometimes that forgiveness will continue to carry a cost. But we do not bear that cost alone; we bear it as people who have already been set free by Jesus.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, You have forgiven me far more than I could ever comprehend. Help me to extend that same mercy to others. Give me the strength to forgive even when forgiveness is costly, and make me a person who reflects Your grace. Amen.
