Forgiveness Without Counting

Scripture: Matthew 18:21–22

Reflection
Peter asks Jesus a question many of us have probably asked in one form or another: How many times do I really have to forgive? There is a point when repeated offenses begin to wear us down. We may wonder whether we have reached the limit of the grace we are expected to extend.

Jesus’ answer—“seventy times seven”—is not a number to keep track of. It is a picture of forgiveness without counting. Jesus calls His people to stop keeping a running tally of how many times someone has disappointed, hurt, or offended us. This does not mean that the hurt is imaginary or that reconciliation never requires difficult conversations. It means that our forgiveness is not controlled by a calculator. We forgive because Christ has first forgiven us.

Prayer
Merciful Lord, You know how quickly I become tired of forgiving others. Help me to release my desire to keep score. Give me patience and grace toward those who have hurt me, remembering always the mercy You have shown me. Amen.

Application Question
Whose offenses are you tempted to keep counting, and what would it look like to entrust that hurt to God instead?
