Mercy and Hardening

Scripture: Romans 9:17–18

“So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.” (Romans 9:18)

Paul brings up Pharaoh, whose heart was hardened as he resisted God’s Word again and again. This is one of the harder truths in Scripture — one that doesn’t come with a fully satisfying explanation. God has mercy on whom He wills, and He hardens whom He wills. It’s straightforward, but it can feel unsettling. Yet even here, the point isn’t to give us a formula for figuring out who is “in” and who is “out.” It’s to remind us that God is sovereign, and that His mercy toward us is never something we deserved or produced ourselves.

Prayer: Lord, some of Your ways are beyond my understanding. Where I cannot see clearly, help me trust that You are both just and merciful. Thank You for showing me mercy I did not earn. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
