Holy, Righteous, and Good

Scripture: Romans 7:12-13
“So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.”

Reflection
Paul refuses to let anyone blame God’s law for the trouble it exposes. The law is holy. The problem was never the command — it was sin using something good for evil purposes. This matters because it’s easy to grow cynical about God’s commands, as though they exist to make life harder or more restrictive. But Paul insists: the law shows sin for what it truly is. It doesn’t create sin; it unmasks it.

There’s something clarifying about this. When we stop blaming the law (and God, its giver) and start recognizing sin’s deceptive tactics, we’re finally in a position to seek real help — not in trying harder, but in the One who can actually deal with sin at its root.

Prayer
Lord, I don’t want to blame You for what my own sin has produced. Help me see Your commands as holy, righteous, and good — gifts meant to reveal, not to condemn me apart from hope. Amen.
