The Law Is Good

Scripture: Romans 7:7-8
“What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COVET.’ But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.”

Reflection
Think of the cookies left out to cool, with the warning, “Don’t touch these.” The command itself wasn’t the problem — it was good and reasonable. But something in us bristles the moment a boundary is named, and suddenly the very thing we might not have noticed becomes all we can think about. That’s the strange power sin has: it hijacks something holy and turns it into an occasion for rebellion. God’s law isn’t the villain in this story. It simply reveals what was already lurking in our hearts.

This is worth sitting with today. When you feel resistance to one of God’s commands, the problem isn’t God’s Word — it’s the sin that twists it. Naming that clearly can free you from blaming God for a struggle that belongs to your own heart.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your law — it is good, holy, and given for my flourishing. Forgive me for the ways I have resented Your commands or blamed You for my own sinful desires. Help me see my heart clearly today. Amen.
