The Free Gift Is Not Like the Transgression

Scripture: Romans 5:15 — “But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!”

Reflection: Just when the diagnosis of sin feels crushing, Paul pivots to grace. Our right standing before God was never something we could produce ourselves. It is a gift — a declaration of God based entirely on what Jesus has done for us. Where Adam’s one act of disobedience brought a flood of sin and death cascading down through history, Jesus’ one act of obedience brings a flood of grace that overflows every barrier sin could ever build.

This is the heart of the gospel: God did not leave us stuck under Adam’s curse. He gave us a new Adam — a new father for a renewed human race. The math of grace doesn’t balance like the math of sin. It overflows. It abounds. It is more than enough.

Prayer: Father, thank You that Your grace and forgiveness are not just equal to my failure, but far greater. Help me to receive Your grace today, not as something I’ve earned, but as the free gift it truly is. Amen.

Application Question: Is there an area of guilt or shame you’ve been carrying as though God’s grace could only barely cover it? What would it look like to trust that His grace truly overflows there?
