Hope Against Hope

Scripture

“In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, ‘So shall your descendants be.'” — Romans 4:18 (NASB)

Reflection

“In hope against hope, he believed.” What a striking phrase. On one side of the ledger stood everything that argued against the promise coming true—decades of waiting, bodies that had grown old and frail, a silence from heaven that must have felt unbearable at times. On the other side stood a single thing: the word of God. And Abraham chose the word.

We all have “against hope” moments—seasons when life seems to argue loudly that God is not working, that the promises do not apply to us, that the story is not heading anywhere good. In those moments, the call is not to deny the difficulty but to turn our eyes toward what God has said. The “in hope” side of the equation is always the promises of God, and they are more solid than any circumstance. When the horizon looks dark, we look to the Word and we believe.

Prayer

Father, there may be things in my life that feel “against hope” right now. Help me to turn my eyes away from the size of the obstacle and toward the faithfulness of Your promises. You have never broken Your word. Give me the courage to believe You even when I cannot see the way forward. Amen.
