The Gift of Righteousness

Scripture

“But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested… even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe.” — Romans 3:21–22 (NASB)

Reflection

We often think of God’s righteousness as a standard we must achieve—a measuring stick held up to us to show how far short we fall. But Paul proclaims something remarkable: the righteousness of God is not a demand; it is a gift. Through faith in Jesus Christ, God declares us right with Him. He does not simply lower the bar; He provides the One who meets the bar perfectly and then covers us in His perfection.

This is the beating heart of the gospel. Before we ever cleaned ourselves up or made ourselves worthy, God moved toward us in grace. The relationship that sin had broken, He has chosen to restore—not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus has done. Receiving that gift requires only one thing: the open, trusting hands of faith.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your righteousness. I confess that I am tempted to try to earn what You have already freely given. Teach me to open my hands and receive Your grace with gratitude and wonder. Help me to rest in what Jesus has done rather than striving to justify myself. Amen.
