“But Now” — The Two Most Important Words

Scripture: Romans 3:21–22a (NASB)

“But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe.”

Reflection

Two small words change everything: but now. Everything before them is the diagnosis — the honest, sobering account of human sinfulness and our utter inability to save ourselves. Everything after them is the gospel. Paul does not soften the bad news, but he refuses to let it be the final word. Into the silence of every closed mouth, God speaks his stunning announcement: righteousness — a healed, restored relationship with him — has appeared.

What is remarkable is that this righteousness comes apart from the Law. It is not earned by trying harder or measuring up. It arrives as a gift, through faith in Jesus Christ, and it is available to all who believe — no exceptions based on background, history, or failure. The Law diagnosed the disease; the gospel provides the cure. And the cure has a name.

Prayer

Father, thank you that your “but now” is spoken over my life. Where I have been exhausted by trying to earn your approval, remind me today that righteousness is a gift you give, not a score I achieve. Help me to simply believe and receive. Amen.

Personal Application

Do you tend to relate to God more like a student trying to pass a test, or like a child receiving a gift? What would it look like today to approach him with open hands rather than a report card?
