The Honest Diagnosis
Scripture: Romans 3:19–20 (NASB)
“Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.”
Reflection
A good doctor doesn’t flatter a sick patient — she tells the truth. The Law of God functions the same way. It holds up a standard of wholeness and flourishing — love for God and love for others, pure and consistent in thought, word, and deed — and in doing so, it exposes just how far short we fall. Our patterns of self-centeredness, our impulse to be masters of our own lives, our fears that lead us to take matters into our own hands: the Law names all of it plainly.
This can feel crushing, but it is actually an act of mercy. A doctor who refuses to name a disease cannot treat it. God’s Law closes every mouth that wants to make excuses or comparisons, and it does so not to shame us into silence forever, but to make us ready to receive grace. Before we can hear “but now,” we must first hear the honest verdict.
Prayer
Lord, grant me the humility to stand before your Law without excuses. Where I have turned inward, where I have doubted your goodness, where I have fallen short of love — I confess it honestly. Thank you that your Law is never the last word. Amen.
Personal Application
Is there an area of your life where you have been making comparisons or excuses rather than honestly acknowledging your need before God? What would it look like to simply close your mouth and receive his grace there?
