One of the sad results of evil and brokenness in our hearts and in the world around us is that God’s blessings do not flow through us to others in the way that they should. Our selfishness deprives our families and friends of the love and care that God intends for them to experience through us. The frailty of our bodies prevents us from carrying out our callings as effectively as we could. Corruption in our politics prevents our governments from being the source of blessing for their citizens that they are meant to be. But Jesus comes to undo the effects of sin and the curse. As He heals, forgives, and restores, He becomes the agent of God’s renewing work in our lives and in the world around us. As recipients of His restoring work, we become vehicles of God’s blessing in our daily lives. Today’s message is “News that Renews,” based on Mark 1:29-39.

What is the purpose of authority? Many believe that the purpose of authority is to get one’s way, to be able to enact one’s own vision for how the world ought to be. But God has a different idea! It is true that God has a vision for the world, but He grants authority to His Son, not to overpower others, but to serve them and set them free. As Jesus teaches and drives out a demon in Mark 1:21-28, He shows us how He intends to exercise His authority – for the good of those He has come to save. Today’s message is “Authority… in the Right Hands,” based on Mark 1:21-28.

In our Gospel reading from Mark 1:14-20, Jesus begins His public ministry with a signature message: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” The coming of God’s kingdom to earth in the person of Jesus is the best news ever (the word “gospel” means “good news”). And that news calls from us a new way to think and to live – “repent” is a word that describes a turn or a change of mind. In what ways are things different because Jesus is here to bring God’s kingdom? Today’s message is “Good News that Changes You,” based on Mark 1:14-20.

When we live in the light of the One who truly sees us in a way that only God can, the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of seeing all of life and reality in a new way – just ask Nathanael in John 1! Ordinary things become vehicles of God’s mercy, difficult circumstances become opportunities to grow in faith, and difficult people become objects of prayer and God’s love. May God grant us the eyes of faith to see the world in the light of the One who sees and knows us. Today’s message is “Come and See,” based on John 1:43-51.

The season of Epiphany is here, and the light of Jesus shines ever brighter as we come to discover who He is and what He has come to do. His public mission begins with His baptism in the Jordan River, where God tears the heavens open to reveal some big truths about Jesus’ identity!
