When Everything Fell Apart

Scripture: Romans 8:20 (with Genesis 3:17–19)

Reflection:
To understand why creation groans, we have to go back to the beginning. God made a good world and placed it under the loving care of His image-bearing creatures. But when Adam and Eve chose to distrust God and grab for control themselves, everything fractured — our relationship with God, with each other, and with creation itself. God told Adam, “Cursed is the ground because of you.” As go the people, so goes the world they were meant to care for. Paul names the result: futility. Work without lasting fruit. Effort that seems to go nowhere.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re pouring yourself out for a good that never quite arrives — a hard relationship, a broken system, a body that won’t cooperate — you’ve felt futility. Paul says this isn’t a flaw in the universe’s design; it’s the specific consequence of humanity’s rebellion, and God Himself subjected creation to it. But — and this is everything — He did it “in hope.” The futility was never meant to be permanent.

Prayer:
God, I feel the weight of futility in my work, my relationships, and this broken world. Thank You that even this frustration exists within Your larger plan of hope. Teach me to trust that You are not finished. Amen.
