Children, Not Slaves

Scripture: Romans 8:14–17

Reflection:
Paul begins with a staggering claim: everyone led by God’s Spirit is a child of God, not a servant kept at arm’s length but a son or daughter welcomed all the way into the family. The Spirit doesn’t make us cower before God like frightened slaves; the Spirit lets us cry out “Abba, Father” — the same intimate word a child uses for a trusted parent. This isn’t wishful thinking. It’s the settled, Spirit-given confidence that the God who rules the universe is, for you, a Father.

Think about what it took to get you here. God didn’t leave the world to sort out its own mess. He sent His Son to stand in your place, to take your sin upon Himself, and to rise again so that His life could become yours. Adoption into God’s family cost everything for Jesus so that you might receive the gift freely. Whatever else is happening in your life today, this identity does not change: you are His.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for making me Your child, not by my effort but by Your grace in Christ. When I forget who I am, remind me by Your Spirit that I can call You “Abba.” Let that truth steady me today. Amen.

Application Question: Where in your life today do you need to remember that you are speaking to God not as a distant judge, but as your Father?
