When the Command Comes Alive

Scripture: Romans 7:9-11
“I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me; for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.”

Reflection
Paul describes something painfully honest here: a command meant for life ended up feeling like death. That’s because sin is deceptive — it takes something good and turns it into a weapon against us. Coveting is a perfect example. “Don’t covet” doesn’t inspire gratitude in most of us; instead, it brings to mind exactly the things we wish we had. Our neighbor’s house, someone else’s job, another person’s family. The command exposes the discontent living in us.

This isn’t cause for despair, but for honesty. God’s law was never meant to be domesticated or ignored — it’s meant to show us our true condition so we understand and feel our need for rescue.

Prayer
Father, I confess that my heart often turns Your good gifts into occasions for envy and discontent. Search me and show me where deception has taken root. Thank You that You don’t leave me there. Amen.
