Where Sin Abounded, Grace Abounded All the More

Scripture: Romans 5:20–21 — “The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that… grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Reflection: There’s a scandalous, almost dangerous-sounding truth buried in these verses: no amount of sin can defeat the grace Jesus won at the cross. You cannot out-sin the forgiveness available to you in Christ. That’s astonishing good news for anyone who has come to understand the depth of their sin problem — and it should drive us to worship, not despair, when we see our own failures clearly.

But a statement like that can also be misheard. If grace covers everything, why not just keep sinning so grace can increase even more? That question isn’t hypothetical — it’s exactly where Paul goes next in Romans 6. Before we get there, though, sit with the weight of this truth: grace is bigger than your worst day, bigger than your longest-running struggle, bigger than the sin you’re most ashamed of.

Prayer: Lord, I confess that grace this large is hard for me to fully believe. Help me to rest in the truth that Your grace abounds even more than my sin does, without using that truth as an excuse. Amen.
