In Adam We Are All in Big Trouble

Scripture: Romans 5:12 — “Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.”

Reflection: Adam wasn’t just a man standing alone in a garden. He was the representative human — the father of all mankind. As he went, so went the rest of humanity. When he reached for the forbidden fruit, he wasn’t only choosing for himself; he was choosing for us. His children and grandchildren didn’t need a specific command to break in order to prove they were sinners too — their sins against conscience were enough. The lying, the stealing, the cruelty we still see (and do) every day are evidence of a nature bent away from God, inherited from Adam himself.

It can feel unfair to be tied to someone else’s choice made so long ago. But God’s design, not our sense of fairness, is what determines reality. We are bound to Adam whether we like it or not. Before we can appreciate the good news of the gospel, we have to be honest about this: apart from Christ, we are dead men and women, cut off from the source of life.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see clearly the reality of sin in my life and in this world. Strip away my excuses and my sense that I could have done better than Adam. Prepare my heart to receive the good news of what You have done. Amen.
